Sandalwood Chips, Red

Wild Crafted - Hawaii

Also Known As – Santalum paniculatum

Overview – On the Big Island of Hawaiʻi sits over 100,000 acres of Hawaiian ʻIliahi trees Santalum paniculatum (Sandalwood), stretching from Maunakea to the Volcano. Thanks to the tremendous efforts and dedication of the family at Háloa Áina we are able to offer you the only Sandalwood  produced in a small section of this ancient forest.

Medicinal Uses – Internally, Sandalwood is used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Some of the uses include as a treatment vomiting, stomach pains, skin disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual dysfunction. It can help stimulate the immune system to grow more white blood cells. Fungal infections like thrush and tinea can be helped by the herb. Some also use it to treat dry coughs, bronchitis, sore throat and infections of the urinary tract. Externally, Sandalwood has been proven to ease stress, anxiety, insomnia, tension and grief. It can be applied to acne, chapped skin and oily or dry skin. Ayurvedic herbal remedies include mixing the powdered wood into a paste to use for snake bite or fever. Sandal wood is also used in aromatherapy for ailments such as nervous disorders, depression and anxiety, rashes, acne, dry and chapped skin, laryngitis, coughs, and urinary infections.

  • Sandal wood oil is a treatment for inflammation of the bladder and pain with urination. Chinese medicine may prescribe it for a migraine sufferer, as it can help to ease the symptoms. If you're lucky enough to live near a sandal wood tree, you can just rub the leaves from the tree between your fingers and then apply the resulting oil on your forehead. If you use essential oil, be sure to dilute it first. It is also considered a sedative in Chinese medicine.

Other Uses – Sandalwood is used in perfumery and carvings from the wood are often sold to tourists. The wood is popular when burnt for incense, which is used for personal use and religious ceremonies.

Herbs to Combine/Supplement – Combine sandal wood with peppermint or ginger for relief from vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea and dysentery.

Parts Used – The wood of the sandal wood tree can be powdered or can be distilled into essential oil.

Cautions - Sandalwood oil can sometimes cause dermatitis in people who are sensitive to it. Be aware that the oil may be adulterated. Due to the high demand and the scarcity of the raw material, many producers are tempted to dilute the oil.

  • If you suffer from kidney disease, you should not use sandal wood internally. Pregnant and lactating women should avoid. Infants and children should not use. There are no known drug interactions with this herb.

Preparation and Dosage - Sandalwood oil should only be used under the direction of a qualified herbalist or physician.
