Also Known As - Rehmania Glutinosa
Overview - Rehmannia is very popular in Chinese medicine, where it is considered to be a longevity tonic, and one of the 50 fundamental herbs. The species name glutinosa comes from glutinous, referring to the sticky nature of the root.
Parts Used - The root. The Rehmannia root is prepared traditionally by boiling the root in a mixture of yellow wine and black bean infusion until the liquids have been boiled away and the roots are black. The roots are then dried in the sun.
Medicinal Uses - Rehmannia is used for diabetes, “tired blood” (anemia), fever, weakened bones (osteoporosis), and allergies; and as a general tonic.
How it works: The chemicals in rehmannia affect the immune system and reduces pain and swelling. Some chemicals in rehmannia also lower blood sugar levels.
Ingredients: Rehmannia root and 110 proof Certified Grain Alcohol in a 2 fl oz amber bottle.
Dosage: Use 6-12 drops in juice or water, under the tongue or as directed by your practitioner. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well. Store in cool dark place. Keep out of reach of children.
Precautions - Rehmannia might decrease blood sugar. There is concern that taking rehmannia with other medications for diabetes might cause blood sugar to decrease too much. Monitor your blood sugar closely. The dose of your diabetes medication might need to be changed. Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTabs, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
