Overview - This pretty little plant is native to the British Isles and many parts of Europe. Ladys mantle has the scientific name of Alchemilla vulgaris. Alchemilla refers to alchemists, who believed that the dewdrops gathered from the leaves of lady's mantle had magical properties that would help them in their quest for the legendary philosopher's stone. This plant's common name of lady's mantle refers to the shape of the leaves, which are shaped rather like a lady's cloak. In late spring, early summer lady's mantle blooms with tiny clusters of chartreuse flowers. It prefers a shady spot in the garden, and is fairly easy to grow. It is not frequently bothered by pests.
Medicinal Uses – Internally, Ladys mantle has been used to relieve menstrual cramps and the symptoms of menopause, as well as being able to regulate a woman's cycle. It has also been used as an effective herbal remedy to treat fibroids and endometriosis. Some use it to help during childbirth, as well as to treat diarrhea and gastroenteritis. Externally, Ladys mantle infusion or extract has been used as a douche to treat excess vaginal discharge and vaginal itching and infection. The infusion can also treat skin rashes such as eczema, can treat cuts and wounds, insect bites and sores. The decoction can also be used as a gargle and mouthwash to treat bleeding gums, canker sores and sore throats.
Other Uses – Lady's mantle is most famous today as a garden plant. It is also used in homeopathy.
Herbs to Combine/Supplement - Lady's mantle can be combined with rose water to make a skin lotion or a vaginal douche.
