Also Known As - Juglans nigra, Akschota, ructus Cortex, Juglans, Juglandis, Juglandis Folium, Juglans regia, Nogal, Walnut, Walnut Fruit, Walnut Hull, Walnut Leaf.
Overview - Black walnut produces the famous walnut wood of commerce, as well as the familiar edible nuts. Treats dog or man bites, painter's oil, flavoring. Black walnut hulls are used for dyeing hair. Boil the hulls in 1 quart of water. Allow to steep until a very dark brew is obtained. Add copperas, the size of a pea, to set the dye. Strain and use as a hair rinse after shampoo. Repeat rinses until desired shade is acquired.
Parts Used - Bark, leaves, rind of the fruit.
Medicinal Uses - The bark and leaves have laxative, astringent and detergent properties, and are used in the treatment of skin troubles. They are of the highest value for curing scrofulous diseases, herpes, eczema, etc., and for healing indolent ulcers; an infusion of 1 OZ. of dried bark or leaves (slightly more of the fresh leaves) to the pint of boiling water, allowed to stand for six hours, and strained off is taken in wine glassful doses, three times a day, the same infusion being also employed at the same time for outward application. Obstinate ulcers may also be cured with sugar, well saturated with a strong decoction of Walnut leaves.
Suggested Preparation and Dosage - Tea: steep 1 oz. of either the bark or leaves in 1 cup water and take 2 or 3 times daily.
Precautions - None known, however its long term use is not recommended. Husk will stain anything it touches.
